Relationship between business environment and entrepreneurial performance of managers of small and medium enterprises (SMES)

Abstract

The study ascertained the relationship between the business environment and the entrepreneurial performance of SME managers in Anambra State. Two research questions guided the study and three null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Correlational research design was used for the study. The population of the study consisted of 2,745 registered SMEs in the State. Simple random sampling was used to select 400 SME managers for the study. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire titled ‘Business Environment as a correlate of Entrepreneurial Performance of SME managers (BEEPSMEM)’ which was validated by three experts with an overall reliability coefficient of 0.81 obtained using Cronbach alpha’s method. Pearson Product Moment correlation was used to answer the research questions while, linear and multiple regression were used to test the null hypotheses. Findings of the study revealed that internal and external business environment had positive and significant (interactive) relationship with the entrepreneurial performance of SME managers. The study therefore concluded that the performance of SME managers are influenced by internal and external business environment. It was recommended among others that, SME managers should always observe their environment to identify threats and opportunities that may occur, so as to swiftly adjust to the situation.
