Compliance status and risk status of stroke among hypertensive patients

Abstract

Hypertension is the major cause of stroke. An explorative study to assess the compliance status and risk status of stroke among hypertensive patients at MIOT Hospitals, Chennai. The study was conducted among 100 hypertensive patients selected through convenient sampling. Demographic variable proforma, compliance scale and stroke risk assessment tool was used to collect the data. The results revealed that there is a low correlation between compliance and risk status for stroke among hypertensive patients with r=0.28 at p<0.05. There is a significant association between compliance and diet pattern at p<0.50, regular activities p <0.04, type of management and there was a significant association between risk score with gender p<0.000, occupation p<0.000 and habits p<0.000. The results indicated that hypertension is the major risk factor for stroke. Hence proper control of blood pressure and early detection can prevent major problems and increase the life span of hypertensive patients.
