Abstract

Pre-endoscopic anxiety is a significant problem and that providing information about the procedure can reduce anxiety and improve acceptance of the procedure. The present study was aimed to assess the effectiveness of pre-procedural teaching on procedural anxiety among patients undergoing upper gastro intestinal endoscopy. A quasi experimental one group pre test and post test design was used to study among 30 patients selected by purposive sampling who were admitted for the upper gastro intestinal endoscopic procedure in CSI Kanyakumari Medical Mission Hospital, Neyyoor. Data were collected using a demographic and State trait anxiety inventory adult score scale followed by pre-procedural teaching was given and after 30 minutes post test was conducted by the same scale. The results showed that the mean state anxiety was 52.6 ± 8.7 and the same after pre-procedural teaching was 40.5 ± 6.0. The mean reduction of anxiety attributes to the effectiveness of pre-procedural teaching in the state of anxiety. Similarly the mean Trait anxiety before undergoing the procedural teaching was 53.0 + 8.4 and the same after undergoing the pre-procedural teaching was 40.6 ± 6.2. The mean reduction was considered as effectiveness of pre-procedural teaching in Trait anxiety.
