Analysis of the trend of literacy in Rajasthan

Abstract

Literacy is an integral part of development of society. Through out history majority of population been illiterate rate in Rajasthan; literacy rate was at its lowest 8.5 per cent in 1951. By that time, it grew to 66.1 per cent in 2011. But on the other side of this huge improvement, it is still below to the India's averageliteracyrateof74.04percent in 2011.Also, there is an un-avoidable gender disparity in the literacy rate. Rajasthan has the biggest gender division in literacy of 23.2 per cent, making it one of the most gender unequal states. The low female literacy holds back the state in development. Rajasthan is the largest state of Indiaaccounting 10 percent of geographical area with wide variations in habitations including desert, tribal areas, eastern plain where providing education services is quite difficult. Different district of the state has been selected from different regions for the analysis and comparison has been done for the literacyrates. The aim of this paper is to analyze the overall trend of literacy in Rajasthan and changing pattern ofliteracy in different districts of Rajasthan during 1951-2011. The literacy trend analysis has been done based on decadal data. The data used for the study is secondary.
