Abstract

One sort of PO is the FPO (Farmer Producer Organization), whose members and board of directors are all farmers. FPOs are promoted and supported by the federal government, state governments, and other governmental organisations using funding from various federally and state-sponsored programmes. The state government is free to establish its own policies for assisting FPOs and to designate state budget funds for this purpose. As a key organisation for expansion and support of FPOs, DAC (Department of Agriculture and Cooperation), the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Government of India collaborate. Small Farmers' Agribusiness Consortium (SFAC), a group established by the federal government to encourage FPO promotion, is assisted by NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development.FPO is a hybrid of totally commercial and cooperative organisations but the basic objective is profits which can be achieved by adopting suitable management practices and being market oriented. When an organisation achieves profits, its members are benefitted in the terms of rise in income leading to socio economic upliftment which in turn leads to retained earnings and growth of organizations.
