27. DSM: A Tool for Negawatt Generation (The Bulletin of Energy Efficiency, August 2003, Vol. 4, Issue 1, pp. 27–30). Abstract Electricity and other sources of energy are critical for a consistent growth of all developing countries. Overall energy consumption in developing countries has grown at a rate of more than 50 per cent, and by the year 2002, it accounted for nearly 50 per cent of the global energy consumption. Electricity use during the same period grew at an average annual rate of 7–8 per cent. This rapid increase in electricity consumption, together with financial constraints on new generation capacities, makes Demand Side Management (DSM) a potentially attractive tool to meet the increased energy demand for electricity in these countries.
