Abstract

The reliability of utility power supply in our country is so poor that we can't rely on it at all if there are certain loads in any industry or otherwise, the operation of which may not tolerate any interruption in power supply. In such cases, we require some emergency power supply arrangement to feed such loads when utility supply isn't available. The emergency power supply is also required for the following purposes. To provide power supply to safety related loads so that accidents are avoided and plant is safely shut down. When crores of rupees are invested, the owner of a manufacturing plant may not like to shut it down due to economic reasons. In that case, emergency power supply is designed to keep the production on partially or fully. Sometimes captive power plants may also be required. This is done to reduce downtime. There may be certain loads, the operation of which can't be stopped because of safety reasons. The provision of emergency power supply is must for such loads. Most companies today require an uninterrupted power supply, especially for computers to remain operational. Before embarking upon an emergency power system, it is very much essential to find out the total wattage requirements for the loads which the emergency power supply system will feed. We should consider starting power requirement also as this can vary from 50% to 300%, on an average, more than the normal power requirement. Resistive loads don't require more power at the time of starting. The capacity of the back up power is decided by the size of the generator, batteries, inverter or any other back ups.
