Effectiveness of Mindfulness Meditation on Quality of Life Among Patients with Alcoholism

Abstract

Mindfulness meditation is a century's old technique that encourages non-judgemental attentiveness to and awareness of the current state of one's body and mind. Treatment of alcoholism takes several steps because of the medical problems that can be cancelled by withdrawal of alcohol. A quasi experimental study to assess the effectiveness of mindfulness meditation on quality of life among patients with alcoholism. The objectives are to assess the pre-test level of quality of life among patients with alcoholism in selected de-addiction center, to evaluate the effectiveness of mindfulness meditation on quality of life among patients with alcoholism in selected de-addiction center and to find out the association between the pre-test value of quality of life among patients with alcoholism in selected demographic variables. Purposive sampling technique was used forthe selection of 50 samples. The results revealed thatthe level of post-test mean score (95–38).was 75.77% which was found to be increased than the pre-test mean score which was (47.36) 38% after the mindfulness meditation programme. The level of quality of life of the alcoholic patients in post test, the mean score was (95.38) 75.77% and the pre-test mean score was (47.36) 38% and the mean difference post test and pre-test of quality of life 47.9 (37.77%) which shows that there is effectiveness after administering mindfulness meditation therefore H, accepted. There is no significant association between pre-test quality of life score of alcoholic patients and their demographic variables like, age, socioeconomic status, residential area, education status, marital status, habit and duration of alcoholic therefore H2 was accepted.
