Abstract

For dairy animals, the yeast mainly Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been considered as the favorable probiotic culture for efficient nutrient utilization and ultimately milk production. Saccharomyces cerevisiae may proliferate and exhibit growth in the rumen and confer health benefits. Growing public concern over the use of antibiotics in feed has reinvigorated recent interest in probiotics, prebiotic and synbiotic as an alternate therapy against harmful pathogens in the GI tract. The effect of specific yeast preparation in the rumen environment and productive performance in dairy animals has been well documented, and has created considerable scientific attention over the last three decades. Yeast supplementation can beneficially modify microbial activities, fermentative and digestive functions in the rumen. The research study has demonstrated that viable yeast preparations can stimulate specific groups of beneficial bacteria in the rumen. The effects of yeast on dairy animal productivity are straindependent. So, all yeast preparations are not same in efficiency. This characteristic unlocks a new field of research for new strains, each being more specialized in its use. Continuous research with live YC supplements has clearly established scientifically-proven strategies for modifying and optimizing microbial activities in the gastrointestinal ecosystem and techniques for improving performance and health of ruminants. The yeast culture supplementation positively affect feed and dry matter which results in maintaining proper health and milk production of crossbred animals. Growing concern over the use of antibiotics and other stimulants in animal feed supplements alarm the potential risk of antibiotics residues appearing in meat and milk, and the need for food supply has encouraged many livestock producer to produce to explore alternative strategies to enhance overall health and performance of their dairy animals and for that yeast and yeast preparation acts as promising alternative strategy.
