Demographic and Socio-Economic conditions in Urban slums of Paschim Medinipur District, West Bengal, 2011

Abstract

According to 2011 census, West Bengal is an urbanized state with 31.89% urban population, which is higher than national average (31.16%). Among the 19 districts in the state, Paschim Medinipur is a backward and less urbanized district with 12.03% urban population to total population. There is 19 Census Towns (CTs) in the district. The district accounts for 26.22% slum population to total urban population ranking 6th position in the state. Among the 19 urban centers, only eight urban centers have reported slum population, 2011. The present study endeavors to study the demographic and socio-economic conditions of slum population in Paschim Medinipur district at town level (2011).
