Abstract Kolkata, the City of Joy is a greying metropolis not only in respect of its concrete jungle but also because of the largest number of 60-plus population that it shelters. Urbanization, modernization and globalization have led to change in the economic structure, erosion and weakening of social values and social institutions such as the joint family, migration of young generations for better standard of living leaving the aged lonely, isolated, insecure and neglected. The present study has been conducted with the objective to investigate the physical, economic, social and psychological well-being of the aged of Kolkata. A questionnaire has been used to survey 120 aged residing in old age homes and own residences. T-tests is done to understand the signifcant differences among the aged in terms of their well-being. Findings showed that there were signifcant differences in the physical, economic, social and psychological well-being of the aged with respect to gender, place of residence, living condition and dependency. Physical and economic well-being of males was far better than females; where as social and psychological well-being of females were better than males. Aged residing in own residences enjoyed better well-being than those residing in old age homes. Aged residing with family members and those who reported to be economically independent were far better off than those residing alone and dependent with respect to their well-being. Top |
