Abstract Real Estate development in West Bengal is a recent phenomenon, particularly in locations where the population growth is phenomenal. The situation of real estate development is concentrated in the urban agglomerations of West Bengal. The process of real estate development is not sporadic but is associated with the present urban areas and potential urban areas. In this paper an attempt has been made to disclose the varied nature of real estate development and the role of gatekeepers in executing the housing projects in Bolpur town of Birbhum district. Housing projects of different scales operate at random in different locations of the town. The paper is an empirical one based on feld observation and put emphasis on the role of gatekeepers in decision making processes on demand and supply chain of housing in the broad spectrum of residential kaleidoscope in real estate development projects. The impact of the projects on space use, space creation, economy and social dynamics is critically examined. Top |
