Abstract

The growing population and increased demand of commodities gave rise to the Industrial revolution in the 19th century that accompanied many new technologies involving the exhaustive use of natural resources like coal and oil. It had not been in thought that these resources are exhaustible in nature and its use will cause the environmental damage at this level. In the mission to achieve more and more economic growth, the dependency on coal and oil has increased at an exceptional rate over the years. The burnt fuels resulted in the release of CO2, NOX, SOX, SPM and other gases into the atmosphere causing extensive environmental damage. It has become essential to look at energy technology with a new perspective that can replace the use of conventional energy resources and check the environmental degradation. No doubt there are abundant renewable sources of energy such as sun, wind, water, sea and biomass that can replace the conventional energy resources but the technologies are not very efficient and need further improvement. These renewable sources are environment friendly, inexhaustible and almost pollution free and hence known as clean energy.
