Abstract

The objective of the present study was to see whether financially dependent and financially independent 120 elderly, ages varying from 70 years and above, differ significantly on three personality traits: Dispositional Hope, Affect States, and life satisfaction. Out of these 120 male elderly respondents, 60 were financially dependent and 60 were financially independent of their family members. For measuring Dispositional Hope, Affect States, and Life Satisfaction,Hindi translation of AHS (Adult-Hope Scale), Positive Affect and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS, David Watson 1988), and Life Satisfaction scale were used respectively. The results indicate that financially independent elderly are higher on these parameters of dispositional hope, positive affect, and Life Satisfaction as compared to their counterparts who were financially dependent upon their family members. Whereas the negative affect state was pre-dominant in financially dependent elderly than financially independent ones.
