Abstract

Five diets containing 0, 25, 45, 65 and 85 per cent of peeled cooked breadfruit meal (PCBFM) as replacement of maize were fed to five groups (40 each) of 200 day-old Anak broiler chicks in an eight week trial using completely randomized design with four replicates. Data were collected on growth performance, carcass characteristics, heamatological indices and blood serum metabolite. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance using SAS package. Results showed that daily weight gain of birds fed 25% PCBFM (32.86g/bird), 45% PCBFM (32.46g/bird) and 65% PCBFM (31.70g/bird) were similar to that of control group (33.01g/bird) but higher (P≤0.05) than those fed 85% PCBFM. Feed utilization, dry matter digestibility and nitrogen retention followed the same trend as weight gain. Live weight, dressed weights, PCV, Hb, RBC, total protein and globulin of birds fed 85% PCBFM were lower (P≤0.05) than those fed control diet. Pancreas and gizzards of birds fed 85% PCBFM were larger (P≤0.05) than those fed control diet. Significantly (P≤0.05) higher alanine aminotransferase (ALT) values were also observed on birds fed 85% PCBFM diet. It was concluded that PCBFM can replace up to 65% maize in broiler diets.
