Abstract

Cassava is a very important crop in Nigeria based on its extensive use especially as a staple food and because of the export demand of some of its products such as chips and pellets, enabling it to be an agricultural foreign exchange earner and contributor to the nation's gross domestic product. This study analyzed the supply response of cassava chips in Oyo State of Nigeria. Random sampling technique was used to select one hundred and twenty (120) cassava chips suppliers in the study area. A well designed interview schedule was used to collect the necessary data from respondents. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were employed in data analysis. The result revealed that cassava chips business is a profitable one with a benefit- cost ratio of 2.85 and a net return of #503,700.01 per hectare of cassava tubers processed into chips and marketed. The regression analysis revealed that factors affecting the quantity of cassava chips supplied by respondents include quantity of cassava harvested per hectare, market price per kilogram of cassava chips, revenue obtained from cassava chips, cost of processing cassava tubers to chips and per hectare cost of cassava tubers production. The study recommended that the government should intensify effort in training cassava farmers on how to improve on quality of cassava chips produced so as to attract better price at the international market.
