Struggle against cancer as reflected in Brief Candle and The fault in our stars Dr. Wanjari Priya D. Principal and Head, Dept. of English, Santaji Mahavidyalaya, Nagpur, E-Mail: priyawanjari@gmail.com Online published on 26 September, 2023. Abstract The astringent truth of living with the diagnosis of cancer finds voice in the fiction of writers like Jodi Picoult, Jojo Moyes, Jenny Downham and Marylee MacDonald. They articulated from the patient's perspective, the adjustments and coping strategies to come out of depression and anxiety. The paper tries to present psychoanalysis of cancer patients as revealed in the fiction of two writers, Mahesh Dattani's Brief Candle and John Green's The Fault in Our Stars. Even though they are on the verge of ‘death,’ these characters refuse to let their lives end in the terrible ‘dark aura’ of death. The paper endeavors to find a way in which literature can advance realistic representations of illnesses that previously have been culturally taboo. In the context of the relationship between humans and disease, it is aimed to analyze their struggle against cancer. The fictional works unfold their physical and psychological suffering. Both the fear of death and the fear of living with a defective body are troublesome. Fear and social marginalization during the treatment are reasoned in the selected fiction.
