Summary With the growth of Power System having synchronous connectivity of all the regions except Southern Region and deployment of EHV, SAS, HVDC, FACTS technologies and 800 kV HVDC under implementation and 1200 kV AC under development, power system of the country will experience sea change, requiring advance technologies such as PMU, WAMS. Smart Grid, SPS etc. for efficient management of the Power System. As the complexity is increasing manifold need of optimum utilization of resources by remote management and control of stations is also being deliberated and considered essential. Fiber Optic Communication with OPGW cable and SDH based Transmission equipment will provide the bandwidth for catering the intended applications in coming times of Smart Grid based operations. Planning of providing OPGW requires to be done in a big way and along with the planning of transmission system to achieve economy scale. Further high capacity SDH equipment could be considered for communication network with in built provision of AMC to take care of aspects such as obsolescence and NMS. In this paper, the major consideration for the deployment of Fiber Optic Communication, outcome of experience in ULDC Projects and emphasis on need of wideband communication to support upcoming technologies in power system management has been detailed. This paper also describes in brief the other communication media considered for catering communication requirement of power system applications. Top Keywords Smart Grid, Power System, OPGW, SDH. Top |
