Constitutional Provisions, Policies, Privileges and Benefits for the Aged in India Prof. Rao D. Pulla Dept. of Cooperation & Applied Economics, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, (A.P.) Abstract The growth in proportions of the aged people is most rapid in developing countries. In India, now eight per cent of the total population belonged to what is referred to as aged persons and this proportion is expected to increase to 21 per cent by the year 2050. Basically Indian elderly have four types of problems: income insecurity, health care insecurity, physical insecurity; social and emotional insecurity. Care for the elderly has become one of the major concerns for the government, policy makers, doctors, educationists, social workers and social scientists etc. The Government of India too provided some provisions reiating to the relief of the aged persons like pensions, social security, social insurance, economic and social planning. The Govemmentis also providing privileges and benefits to the elderly through legal help, taxation and travel by road, by train and by air. Some of the state governments are also implementing separate schemes for the aged. Top | | |
