Assessment of Performance Appraisal Systems in Selected Industries of Mysore District-Perception of Appraisers and Appraises

Abstract

The present study assesses the performance appraisal in few selected industries in Mysore district. A total of 300 respondents (150 appraisers and 150 appraisees were randomly selected. They were administered questionnaire developed by the researcher separately for appraisers and appraisees on performance appraisal separately. The data was collected in two sessions by contacting individually each respondent in selected industries of Mysore district. The data were subjected descriptive analysis and following results were observed. On the whole perception of performance appraisal was low both from appraisers and appraises. Performance appraisal as assessed by appraisers was 57.58% as against 60.33% by appraises. Hierarchically, appraisers had highest performance appraisal was seen in the case of task and task orientation (67.50), followed by Identification of factors-facilitating and hindrance of employees (64.48), Open communication, mutuality between appraisers and appraisee's (55.63%) and identification of training and development needs (33.82) had least performance appraisal. In the case of appraises component task and target orientation (69.56) had highest appraisal, followed by interpersonal relations (69.00), Role and responsibilities for persons (63.27), training and development needs (59.85%) and Open communication (45.27%) had least appraisal scores. Improving performance appraisal through various techniques was discussed.
