Abstract

Introduction

Haryana is one of the rich fluoride belt areas in India where the fluoride content in water is upto 1.5 ppm in certain area. It is a profound public health problem as the main water source in Haryana is through tubular supply which usually comprises high fluoride content.

Aims And Objectives

1). Assessment of prevalence of enamel opacities and Dental fluorosis among 12–15 years old, high school children in Ambala district, Haryana. 2.) Assessment of correlation of enamel defects and dental fluorosis with any other demographic details.

Materials And Method

After obtaining ethical clearance the study was conducted in 11 randomly selected schools. All the high school students who were between the ages of 12–15 years were interviewed and examined (Universal sample). The data regarding general examination, enamel opacities/hypoplasia and dental fluorosis were recorded on a structured format. Type III examination was conducted and the enamel opacity/hypoplasia was recorded as per D.D.E. index and dental fluorosis as per Dean's fluorosis index (modified).

Results

Enamel opacities were found in 30.2% of teeth. The recording of anaemia showed that 23.1% (263) subjects had anaemia and the remaining 76.9% (877) subjects were not anaemic.

Conclusion

There is a correlation between Anaemia (PEM, B.M.I) and dental fluorosis.
