This paper examines the impacts of an SHG-and community-based seed production programme on agricultural households’ knowledge and adoption of improved varieties in Uttar Pradesh, India. We used cross-sectional data from a stratified random sample of 815 farmers and a probit model to determine the factors of household participation. We found that participating in a programme has a positive, statistically significant effect on a household's knowledge level and adoption of technology, and the knowledge level was higher among seed producer SHGs compared to households not engaged in seed production activities. The study highlights the importance of collectives, stating it improves knowledge and technology adoption.
