Abstract

Education is one of the primary agents of conversion towards development and is a vital need of every student. Education is in fact, an input not only for economic development of tribes but also for inner strength of the tribal communities which helps them in meeting the new challenges of life. Education is very important to the tribal communities because it helps in building confidence among the tribes so that they can deal with outsiders on equal terms. Despite the great efforts by the government for the overall development of the scheduled tribes, they are still far behind in almost all the standard measure of development. Mainly due to the high rate of illiteracy, poverty, backwardness, very low status of education and lack of awareness of the various government programmes and policies made for their upliftment the tribal people are not able to participate in the process of development. Hence, the educational status of the scheduled tribes, particularly Balti tribes are extremely essential. The aim of the study is to understand and to know the educational status and problems faced by the Balti tribe students studying in the higher secondary schools in Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir state along with to suggest suitable measures to overcome these problems. The analysis is based on the empirical study undertaken on the Balti students who were studying in higher secondary schools of Kargil district. Combination of randam and purposive sampling technique is used for collection of data. The findings reveal that there is lack of staff and facilities in the schools. Dropout rate is high among the students of Balti tribes. They were not aware about the availability of seats that are reserved in educational institutions for the Balti community and were not aware of government programmes and policies regarding the education of their community. Suggestions were briefly discussed in the study.
