112. Basics of Electric Motors

(Electrical Review, August 2003, pp. 8–12).

Abstract

An electric motor is a device for converting electrical energy into mechanical energy. Motor works opposite to dynamo. Dynamo makes use of mechanical movement to generate current whereas motor uses current to produce mechanical movement. Much of the world's work is done by electric motors. Electric motors are everywhere. Almost every mechanical movement that we see around us is caused by an AC or DC electric motor. To show their (electric motors) importance in our daily life, a walk through a modern house to count all the appliances making use of electric motors will give over 50 electric motors hidden in all sorts of devices. Everything that moves uses an electric motor to accomplish its movement. The forces behind this work are magnetic in nature. By understanding how a motor works we can learn a lot about the motor in general and make best use towards getting maximum work done along with energy conservation.
