71. Energy Efficiency in Low Load Consumers

(The Bulletin on Energy Efficiency, August 2003, Vol. 4, Issue 1, pp. 23–25).

Abstract

A bulk of the world's population can be categorized as ‘low load consumers’ (200 W or below). Much of the focus of modern day power sector reforms currently underway, is to provide and meter electricity to such consumers. Meeting the needs of this 100 per cent metering objective demands a considerable investment of resources, such as energy meters, reading, billing, collection and maintenance systems and processes. This article discusses the concept of a load limiter device that provides a very low-cost tamper-proof “100 per cent control” alternative to “100 per cent metering” small consumer segments, while safeguarding the utility power consumption and simultaneously regulating the unauthorized usage of electricity by the consumer. According to recent statistics from the power ministry, electricity has reached about 80 per cent of the villages and 60 per cent of the households in India. About 50 per cent connections are yet unmetered.
