66. Alternative Approaches to Determination of Stiffness of Ball Bearings Prashad Har (BHEL Journal, December 2003, pp. 59–70). Abstract An alternative approach has been developed to determination of stiffness of ball bearings through evaluation of electrical parameters under different operating conditions. These parameters have been theoretically evaluated using width of deformation on the track surface of races, minimum film thickness, lubricant characteristics and bearing geometry. Besides this, by applying another developed alternative approach also, the stiffness of a ball bearing has been assessed approximately. This alternative approach is based on the inverse of the change of width of bearing deformation on the track surface of races with applied load. The variation of stiffness has been determined with the applied loads under different speeds of operation using electrical analogy. The values of effective stiffness determined by these developed alternative approaches, i.e. by electrical analogy approach and by the inverse of change of width of bearing deformation, have been compared with the values determined by the existing conventional procedure, and found to have matching trend.
