Abstract

Machine operators in power generation, construction and municipal services are increasingly obliged by today's environmental regulations – and their voluntary adoption of ISO 14000 – to use biodegradable lubricants. Design and maintenance engineers also take increasing amount of the application possibilities and user benefits of biodegradable lubricants together with the respective standards and norms. While formerly only technical criteria were taken into account, the biodegradability and toxicity of base oils and additives are increasingly scrutinized today. For development engineers and users alike, it is therefore critically important to select the optimal lubricants fulfilling all technical and ecological requirements.
