(NAVNIRMAN, January-December 2002, pp. 1221).

Abstract

Jojwa-Wadhwana tank is situated in Dabhoi/Sankheda Taluka of Vadodara District Gujarat State, constructed in 1909–10 by erstwhile King Gaekwad (under British presidency ruled by East India Co.). Tanks have been the sole source of water at rural level, and the adoption of tanks in rural context dates back to “Harrapan” era, remains of tanks are clearly visible in “Dholavira” (Kutch, Gujarat) digging and it appears from the remains that life in that era revolved around tanks, similarly as cultures have mushroomed along rivers worldwide. Wadhwana tank deriving its water from Orsang river, catered to the need of Irrigation, maximum an extent 5127 ha. (Year 1997–98) (73% utility). For the last 10 years incoming of water to tank has been reduced due to various check-dams & schemes taken up on U/s of river. Govt. has planned to obtain the water from Sardar Sarovar Project via its system, for the last two years water is being fed in tank to replenish the shortage. Farmers are being trained for the new challenges. Tank is being renovated and systems of canals are being modernized by providing lining. Results are encouraging. Tank is all set to be a tool for sustainable development in rural area, equally contributing towards village economy, social development, its micro-climate, and environment.
