Abstract

Papaya (Carica papaya) is a popular and economically important fruit tree of tropics and subtropics. It is consumed world wide as fresh fruit, as vegetable and also have processing value. However, Papaya is now attracting interest in the global market due to active chemical extract from its leaves to cure dengue fever. Lipase as digestive enzyme and used in industrial preparation for pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food products. This review highlighted the basic biology, genetics, propagation, conservation, genetic improvement via transformation, and sex linked marker identification for improvement in Carica papaya. The study of genetics and genomics also provides the trait inheritance and molecular inheritance mechanisms of genes which are the basic for trait identification, modification and regulation essentially needed for commercial production with high economic return.
