Abstract Rapid growth of urbanization and industrialization has chronically increased pressure on the infrastructure and services, rendered by civic bodies for management of solid waste. As a result, it has become imperative for scientific management of solid waste in the affected areas. The present paper attempts to highlight prevailing services for waste management in Kanpur city. The main objective of the study is to categorise different sanitary zones of Kanpur city on the basis of existing waste management services. The study is based on secondary data collected from Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC). For this purpose Waste Service Index (WSI) has been designed. Three variables namely, number of waste transportation vehicles, number of sweepers and number of Dhalaos (dustbins) in all Kanpur Municipal Corporation zones have been taken into account for calculation of Waste Service Index. Three categories i.e. highly Served, Moderately served and Least Served Zones have been identified. The study also examines deficiency in existing system of waste transportation in Kanpur city. Top Key Words Urbanization, Waste Service Index and Waste Management System. Top |
