Improving quality of life in the slum is one of the development goals for new millennium. The existence of slums is essentially a manifestation of poverty, along with the economic and industrial development-slums will continue to exist and grow further Increasing numbers of slums constitute a major challenge to development. In India, about 6.54 crore population live in slums, which are in appalling condition due to dilapidated and infirm housing structures, poor ventilation, over-crowding, inadequate lighting, lake of safe drinking water, absence of toilet facilities, unavailability of basic services. Supply of these services is one of the biggest challenges to all urban planners and policy makers. Bhopal being capital of Madhya Pradesh has a huge influx of population who resides in slums and squatter settlements. According to Census 2011, the total area of Bhopal city is (287.17 sq km) with (17.96 lakh) population. There are 380 slums distributed in Bhopal city with 4.91 lakh (27.38%) slum dwellers living in miserable condition. Slums are spread all over the city, core and middle (old Bhopal) area of city has huge no of slums though periphery has less than in comparison (new Bhopal). This study is based on primary survey conducted in ten selected slums distributed in different zones in the city. For this purpose 200 hundred households were surveyed. There is a need to conduct a deep analysis of the socioeconomic condition of slums in Bhopal city and also examine the problems and challenges related to infrastructural facilities across the slums it will also helpful to come out with more practical policy implication at the grass root level.
