Abstract Livestock are the important component of farming system in Indian agriculture. Dung is an important byproduct of livestock. It is used as manure, or is converted into dung cakes for use as fuel or mixed with clay for flooring and plastering of mud houses. Draught animal power is the source of renewable energy which has been used traditionally for crop production in agriculture. Livestock provides draught animal power and manure which improves the soil structure and fertility as well as water retention capacity. Both uses are environmental friendly improving energy and nutrient cycling. Dung fuel, manure and draught power are the major inputs contributed by livestock in promoting sustainable agriculture development. The present study is based on the secondary sources of data. The main objective of the present study is to know the role of livestock in sustainable agriculture development in the Ballia district.
