Abstract

Increase in population and associated activities of urban & industrial development have resulted in exerting more pressure on natural resources thereby causing damage to the ecosystem upon which human sustenance rests. It has resulted in degradation that cannot be set right by the self regulatory mechanism of the environment. The present study through Satellite based analysis involves various aspects, such as land use, water resources, land degradation, etc. to map and monitor the changes due to anthropogenic activity in a part of Sonbhadra district south of river Son. Proximity of coal & abundant water resources has given impetus to the industrial development & resultant urbanization of the region. Thermal power generation, open cast coal mining, limestone quarrying & stone crushing for building materials are the important activities which is causing adverse impacts on the environment of the study area. An in-depth environmental analysis of the study area points to the drastic changes in the general land use of the region on account of undue anthropogenic interventions thereby lowering the overall quality of the geo-environment have been highlighted in the present study. The present study emphasizes the importance of remote sensing based studies in environmental analysis of an area of interest.
