Abstract

Head and Neck Cancer is one form of cancer that usually begins in the squamous layer of cells that line the moist and mucosal surfaces in the head and neck (for example, inside the nose, the mouth and the throat). Evidence from studies supports the view that the course of treatment for cancer patients greatly improves their health-related quality of life. However, the amount of improvement varies across individuals. The present research investigates the relationship of treatment duration perceived social support, and perceived locus of control with health-related quality of life of patients of head and neck cancer. Sixty head and neck cancer patients responded on SF-36 Quality of Life Scale, Social Support and Perceived Locus of Control questionnaires. Results of the study indicated a positive and significant association between some aspects of the health-related quality of life and treatment duration of these patients. The quality of life was also found to be positively associated to the perceived social support and internal locus of control. However, the external locus of control was found to be negatively correlated with the quality of life of these patients. These study findings suggest the possibility of including social support and locus of control while planning future intervention programs to reduce the psychological problems of cancer patients.
