Managing and organizing innovation in the emerging new knowledge economy

Abstract

In the global knowledge economy of today, academic and business R&D organizations are facing increased turbulence and complexity in their work environment. To meet these challenges, the popular approach, which has been focus and attention towards innovation, in order to create and sustain competitive advantage. The conventional western approach knowledge is to acquire and identify through hard process, which mostly expose quantifiable data, and universal procedures. As mostly we visualize that the corporate R&D organizations generally prefer cookbook solutions to arrive at increased efficiencies, lower costs, and improved returns on investments. And by and large, a handful of companies and academic R&D organizations in the “leading edge” are seeing that in the beginning it is felt unearth and more promising solution, by tapping into the tacit, often subjective experiences, insights, and intuitions of individuals; especially those individuals who are “high achievers”. This study focused on 32 top managers in leading hi-tech, knowledge-based organisations in Bangalore, drawn both from corporate as well as academic world. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the CEO's and Directors of these “knowledge citadels” look at productivity and innovation, in the years and decades to follow. Overall this paper presents the major findings of this survey study, concentrating on managerial implications at both the management level, as well as the organising level.
