Fruit growth studies in plum cultivars under mid hills of Uttarakhand Kareem Abdul, Dimri D.C., Nautiyal M.C. Deptt. of Horticulture, College of Forestry and Hill Agriculture, G. B. Pant Univ. of Agril. and Tech., Hill Campus, Ranichauri, Tehri Garhwal (Uttarakhand) Online published on 5 April, 2012. Abstract Plum belongs to the Prunus of the sub-family Prunoidae and family Rosaceae. These are widely cultivated in the hilly terrains between 1500 to 2200 m above MSL and also under sub-tropical plains of Punjab, Haryana and U.P. Like other stone crops pollination is prerequisite of fruit set in plum. After pollination, fertilization and fruit set, the fruit is still very small and many factors influence its growth and ultimate size, including the genetic make-up of the variety. Growth can be measured by increase in size, volume, fresh weight and dry weight. The fruit growth is ultimately an outcome of initial cell division and subsequent cell enlargement. The combined growth resulting from cell division, cell enlargement and air space formation results in general a double sigmoidal growth curve in all the plum cultivars evaluated, representing the three distinct growth phases viz., first rapid growth phase following second slow growth and finally leading to third rapid growth.
