Heterosis and inbreeding depression in Brinjal

Abstract

Seven parental lines of brinjal along with their 21 F1’s and 21 F2’s progenies derived from a 7x7 partial diallel set, were evaluated in a randomized block design with three replications. Five crosses namely, RCMB-10 x RCMB-4, RCMB-10 x RCMB-1, RCMB-3 x BB-64, RCMB-1 x BB-64 and BB-40 x BB-64 exhibited maximum heterosis along with high SCA for fruit yield over the superior parent, revealing involvement of non-additive genes and these crosses may be considered as the promising crosses for yield. Negative inbreeding depression exhibited by crosses RCMB-7 x RCMB-4 for yield, RCMB-10 x RCMB-4 & RCMB-10 x RCMB-1 for plant height, RCMB-7 x RCMB-3 for fruit length and number of fruits, RCMB-4 x RCMB-1 for fruit breadth, RCMB-1 x BB-64 for number of fruits indicated that these crosses have potential through desirable transgressive segregants in the later generations may used for evolving a high yielding variety after selection in segregating generations.
