Status of Women's Empowerment in Rural Delhi

Abstract

Our Democratic Polity, Laws, Development Policies, Plans and programmes have aimed at women's progress in different spheres. Though there has been an improvement in the status of girls and women after India gained independence, the agenda of an empowered and self-reliant girl child continues to be a distant dream in India. The general notion among the people is that the women living in urban settlements are at advantage and enjoy far better status in comparison to the women in rural India. Delhi, being the capital of India is at the centre of attention regarding all the schemes/programmes launched by Government as well as NGOs. This paper attempts to explain the concept and need of empowerment of women in Delhi, particularly the status and role of women in its villages. A survey was conducted in selected villages of Delhi to find out the status of women empowerment with respect to their role in decision making, employment status and perceptions regarding general issues concerning role and status of women in family as well as society. Findings have revealed that women in rural Delhi are still not enjoying a satisfactory status of empowerment. Though there is some improvement in the status of women's empowerment in comparison to the past few centuries, still we are far distant from the desired level of empowerment among Indian women.
