Self Concept as an Indicator of School Effectiveness

Abstract

The social and economic context of the Indian society places an intense emphasis on academic performance of students for their future success in life. This has created a situation wherein a large majority of schools and teachers focus their entire attention on enhancing academic achievement of students. However, though high academic achievement scores of an individual helps him/her to acquire admission to institutions of higher learning, the ultimate success of an individual depends on how economically productive and socially adjusted he/she is. Thus the future success of an individual in life does not depend solely on his/her academic achievement. There are several factors that influence an individual's behaviour and performance such as his/her self concept, attitude towards life, emotional and social intelligence, adjustment, positive outlook and so on. Schools are expected to create, maintain and provide a congenial and vibrant environment to students in which students are motivated to perform well in examinations, develop positive school related attitudes and self concept and prepare them to lead an economically productive and socially adjusted life. Moreover, self concept is usually looked upon as a significant outcome of education. Hence self concept of students is one of the important indicators of school effectiveness in the present paper.

The present paper is aimed at investigating into the extent to which schools are effective in developing self concept of students.
