Online Published on 15 February, 2024. Abstract A study was conducted on the prevalence of kidney worm, Stephanurus dentatus and to describe the gross and microscopic findings in affected kidneys of slaughtered pigs (Sus scrofa) in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh state, India during December, 2020 to November, 2021. Of the 170 slaughtered pigs, 15 (8.82%) were infected with Stephanurus dentatus either in kidney or in peri-renal fat. Parasites were thick, stout and were characterized by thick-walled and cup-shaped buccal capsule, intestinal brush borders and vacuolated lateral chords. Parasite eggs were detected in urine of all infected pigs. Grossly, multiple parasite cysts were noticed in the affected kidneys mostly within the peri-renal fat and renal pelvis region containing gelatinous or purulent contents with adult and larval forms of the parasite. Microscopically, cysts were characterized by densely infiltrated, thick-walled fibrous tissue capsule enclosing the cut sections of kidney worms and numerous eggs. Degenerative changes and the lesions of interstitial nephritis were noticed in the adjacent renal parenchyma. Top Keywords Kidney worm, Prevalence, Pigs, Stephanurus dentatus, Andhra Pradesh. Top |
