Abstract

To ascertain a simple and reliable artificial inoculation technique for web blight of mungbean, three methods namely foliar spray, soil inoculation and natural field screening at hotspot were evaluated using mungbean variety ML2056. In soil inoculation at 20g/100g of inoculum in top 5 cm of soil, pre-emergence mortality was 26.67 per cent. It exhibited 26.67, 33.33 and 46.67 per cent of seedling rot during third, fourth and fifth weeks after inoculation (WAI), respectively without showing any foliar symptoms. Under natural field conditions, incidence and severity of disease were 36.67 and 26.95 per cent, respectively with 19.46 per cent PDI fifth WAI. In case of foliar spray with 1x107 viable propagules per ml, disease incidence and severity were 93.33 and 76.67 per cent, respectively with 92.59 per cent PDI. In case of natural field conditions at hotspot location, disease appeared late exhibiting foliar symptoms but not as severe as in foliar spray. In nutshell, the foliar spray of pathogen was found to be the reliable technique for artificial inoculation of web blight of mungbean.
