Abstract The article aims to provide an informed view to metadata as an information retrieval tool and importance of technical metadata in multimedia information retrieval. Th e purpose of this article is to identify and appraise the metadata standards for digital images, audio and video collections. The metadata standards were identified through a thorough study of literature, as well as projects undertaken. Metadata standards available for digital images, audio and video resources are Dublin Core, METS, MIX, VRA core, DIG35 specification etc. MPEG-7 and MPEG-21 are metadata standards specially designed for multimedia resources.
