Abstract

A research library works with the sole purpose of satisfying the information needs of the research professionals, and scientists and consists of the information resources of a particular subject domain. With the advent of Information, communication, and technology, many of the techniques are introduced in the library and information centers which can assist in routine work and enhance the working capabilities of the library professionals. Radiofrequency identification technique (RFID) is one of these. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technologies were invented roughly 30 years ago. It is the latest trending, highly popular, and very successful technology to be used in library theft detection systems. Many of the research organizations are in a transitional phase from traditional libraries to fully automated ones. It is the most recent technology used in libraries for book identification, self-checkout, categorizing and transferring library volumes, and theft detection. These applications can result in significant staff cost savings and increased productivity. They can also eliminate transcription errors, improve the customer experience, reduce book theft, and keep an uninterrupted record of media collections updated. The paper discusses the components and technical features of a present-day RFID library system to give a framework for implementing this system in a special library. This article has been written to articulate the pros and cons of implementing RFID services in a scientific research library and to know about the user’s perception of RFID-integrated library services.
