Molecular characterization of Macrophomina phaseolina from black gram seeds

Abstract

Diseases are one of the most significant restrictions in commercial crop production, as they cause significant productivity losses. Black gram, like other crops, is susceptible to biotic (fungi, bacteria, and viruses) as well as abiotic stresses. Fungi Macrophomina phaseolina, have been linked to black gram seeds. Genetic identification was done to identify the fungal pathogen at the species level. The dominant mycoflora developed on black gram seed samples during the seed mycoflora study was separately cultured on Potato Dextrose Agar and was used. Molecular identification through Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) rDNA region of dominant seed mycoflora isolated from black gram cultivars/genotypes revealed 95.46 per cent similarities with Macrophomina phaseolina isolate.
