Abstract

Despite all efforts, performance of Irrigation projects in India and south Asia is reported to be very low, having an overall efficiency of 25–30 per cent only. Lack of proper irrigation water management is one of the most important factors for poor performance of irrigation systems. A study was conducted to assess the performance using physical, Bio-economical and Social organizational indicators from the point of view of and canal managers in Mehgawan Irrigation project (MIP) in Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh.

The overall efficiency of MIP is 23.4 per cent whereas conveyance, application and distribution efficiency are 52 per cent, 64.8 percent and 69.8 percent respectively. The study revealed that efficiency decreases from head to tail reach. The relative Irrigation water supply is found to decrease from head to tail reach of the canal. The outputs per ha of the cropped area in head, middle and tail reaches of the canal are Rs. 14,284.00, Rs.13,740.00 and Rs. 8,996.00 respectively. Output per unit crop water requirement is the lowest in tail reach 25.67 Rs/m3 and highest in Head reach 40.5 Rs/m3. Output per unit of irrigation supply is highest for gram followed by wheat, pea and lentil. The study reveals that whereas 87% farmers in the head reach and 65% of farmer in the middle reach, it is only 10% farmers in the tail reach are satisfied with present situation of canal command.Percentage of farmer contributing towars the maintenance of the irrigation system are found to be 47.5%, 25% and 7.5% in head, middle and tail reach, respectively.
