Harnessing ICT for national security and sustainable development in Nigeria

Abstract

The paper discusses the role that ICTs can play in ameliorating the challenges against National Security and also Sustainable Development in Nigeria. Various areas of development and security systems where ICT can be effectively employed are discussed. They include monitoring and surveillance of countries' streets, seaports, airports, shipments, data traffic through cell phone, broadband, Internet etc. Equipments and technologies required for the same are discussed. Authors suggest that data mining technologies, social network analysis, corporate surveillance biometric surveillance, surface surveillance, satellite imagery etc that can be employed to achieve national security. Introducing job oriented ICT related programmes are also suggested. Concludes by stating that to overcome the present national security challenges and eradicate poverty and ensure sustainable development; current technologies should be used and all stakeholders must work together.
