Abstract

The traditional idea of gender division of work, which restricts women within domestic walls, has gradually weakened and broke down. In recent years, rural women reportedly play an important role in economic development through active participation in agricultural activities, small industries, services, and government schemes like MGNREGA. In MGNREGA, which guarantees 100 employment days to every rural household willing to undertake unskilled manual work, one-third of all work days are reserved for women. After the implementation of this scheme, a good number of rural women got employment in it. An attempt has been made to fnd out the change in rural women workforce in Uttar Pradesh during 2001–2011 through a comparative intra-regional study.

The analysis, based on secondary data, shows that there is marginal decline in women workforce at the state level. The inter-regional scenario reflects general improvement in Western Uttar Pradesh and Awadh region and a worse situation in Bundelkhand and Eastern Uttar Pradesh.
