Abstract

An attempt has been made to study the trend and spatial pattern of area, production and productivity of mango crop in Malda, district W.B. The collected data have been analysed with the help of simple percentage, decadal growth, moving average method and location quotient as well as graphical presentation techniques. The percentage of area under mango to district's total geographical area has increased steadily over the years. There is wide variation in year wise production and productivity. The fve year moving average curve clearly reflects the fluctuations. Generally, the productivity of Barind region is less than Diara region. Yet the Barind region has experienced high decadal growth rate in area under the mango than Diara region. The farmers are inclined to mango cultivation due to high return from their holdings. The Barind region is not physically suitable for mango cultivation. Drip irrigation system is to be installed with a view to arrest water loss and to increase water use efficiency. Proper upkeep and scientifc management of orchards is important to maintain the trees in healthy and disease-free conditions for better productivity.
