Levels of urbanization in Maharashtra: A geographical analysis

Abstract

Maharashtra is the second largest state in India both in terms of population and geographical area. The present paper, based on the secondary sources of data mainly collected from Census of India, 2001 & 2011 and Economic Survey of Maharashtra, 2013–14, intends to analyse the levels of urbanization in Maharashtra. The growth of urban population during the last decade of 2001–11 was 23.64 per cent. Maharashtra with largest urban population (5.08 Crores) in terms of its proportion (45.22%) in 2011, ranksthird among the major states, which has increased from 42.43 per cent in 2001. It is also found that the urbanization of Scheduled Castes (38.33% in 2001 to 43.55% in 2011) and the Scheduled Tribes(12.72% in 2001 to 14.31% in 2011) has augmented, butstill lagbehind moreparticularly the tribals, interms of urbanization and modernization. The proportion of urban population in the state ranges from a minimum of 11.09 per cent in Gadchiroli district to 100 percent in Mumbai and Mumbai Suburban districts. Other than Mumbai and Mumbai sub-urban, comparatively high proportion of urban population is in Thane(76.99%), Nagpur(68.31%) and Pune(60.99%) districts. The urban population is mainly concentrated in the fve districts having the proportion above the state average (45.22%).
