Abstract

Kolkata is located at 22°34’ North Latitude and 88°22’ East Longitude. The slope of Kolkata is from west to east from the river Hoogly and lies on its clay bed deposits. The alluvial piles are of Quaternary Age. The depth of the pebbles covering parts of Taratala (south-west Kolkata) is 130 cms in depth. Trapped water between the impervious clay layers creates water reservoirs. The Master Plan for water supply in Kolkata Metropolitan Area, published in 1966, took a stock of existing situation and prescribed remedies for the existing population. It was recommended that sixteen persons per acre would be provided 20 gallons per capita per day (gpcd) and Kolkata and Howrah together would receive 40 gpcd. From 1982 onwards Kalighat and it's surrounding areas are provided water from Garden-Reach Treatment Plant but the increase in population gave birth to inadequate supply of safe water. In 2005, Kalighat Pumping Station was constructed to cater the increasing demand of water by supplying filtered, chlorinated pure and safe water. This project was the combination of public and professional perception, planning and implementation, using economically and environmentally feasible innovative technology to solve the water supply problem.
